The Landscape Task Force is a group of eight PRIDES members who are meeting weekly to make the revitalization of our medians a reality.
Team Lead/Project Manager: Bruce Kilbride
The SCW PRIDES Landscape Task Force (LTF) is planning the revitalization of the medians along RH Johnson Boulevard from Bell to Grand and Meeker from Grand to RH Johnson. The vision is to have an updated, cohesive look throughout the medians. The Boulevards are a reflection of the pride and care we take in maintaining our individual homes, not just for the appearance but for the value of our properties.
There are several reasons for removal of specific plants: over the years the plant may have outgrown the space; it can no longer be pruned successfully; it may be too close to the curb; the water may
not be right; any number of reasons it may not be doing well; or it just plainly doesn’t look good any longer. We have identified most of the plants to be removed in all the sections and you have probably noticed that Maricopa County Transportation Dept. has already removed many of them. We have worked with the SCW Desert Garden Club to salvage many of the cactus and succulents that they will be able to repot and sell to our residents.
We look at many factors when choosing new plants: is it waterwise and heat tolerant; what size will it be at maturity; does it bloom and if so what color; how will it fit with other plants near it; what are it’s water needs; how difficult is it to maintain etc. Replanting will begin in mid-September.
The PRIDES will be funding this project through a variety of sources. The SCW PRIDES is a 501(c)(3) Charitable Non-Profit Organization, our only fundraiser is the sale of Luminaria during the Holiday Season. We are fortunate that our residents, local businesses, churches and other organizations, through their donations, bequeaths, and grants support us in our mission to keep SCW a beautiful and desirable place to live. We are greatly appreciative of the crew from Maricopa County Transportation Dept. for the support they provide every week and their extra efforts on this project of removing plants and digging holes for replanting.
The LTF has compiled a list of plants approved for use in the community. You will see young healthy plants varied in color, size and bloom season. Some of these feature plants to watch for are...
